Question 1: What is your opinion about the President Trump’s immigration policies that are affecting people across the country?
“I think it’s a very immature way of proving that he has power. Also, it is not a coincidence that he only bans people from countries that he has no business with and I think it is just a power move and there is not really any threat that poses against us except for terrorist which can come from anywhere.”
Question 2: What if anything concerns you about the new law?
“A lot of families are being broken apart because of this and not even people under his ban that he thinks should be affected, so there are people that used to live in America legally or worked here that are being separated because of travel bans.”
Question 3: Why should or why shouldn’t illegal immigrants be detained?
“I don’t think they should be detained unless they’ve done anything wrong and I know a lot of people think “you should just do it the legal way” and we have a process for a reason and a system for a reason but that could take up to 14 to 27 years. People act like it’s going to the DMV and wait for an hour or two when in reality it takes years.”
Question 4: Do you personally know someone who is illegal? How does that influence your opinion?
“I do know quite a few people who are here illegally for a number of reasons, some people’s visas expired and they haven’t been renewed and some people this is the only place that they could go. It’s worrying because although it is just a lot of talk and not much is going to happen I am worried for their safety and it stinks because a lot of people don’t know the real reason for coming here. They are not trying to steal our jobs they’re just trying to live.”
Question 5: How do you feel about ongoing discussions with university administrations to deem Texas State a “Sanctuary Campus?” Do you think that status would affect how safe students feel on campus?
“I do think being a Sanctuary school would make students feel a lot safer and if the president says there’s nothing we could do I don’t know how much we can try to persuade someone who says that we’ve reached a dead end but I do think it’s important to have the fight so at least people know that someone cares about them, that there’s people that support them whether we make that official change.”
