Question 1: What is your opinion about President Trump’s immigration policies that are affecting people across the country?

“I think President Trump’s immigration in response to an anger that is in a lot of ways misguided. People see problems in their everyday lives, they lose their jobs and stuff like that, and they think these immigrants from these countries that haven’t been immigrating in the past are the problem, so they put the blame on those people, and that’s translated into this misguided effort."

Question 2: What if anything concerns you about the new law?

“In content it concerns me, because it’s not based in any kind of facts or any kind of study that shows that people from these kind of countries are more dangerous than anyone else. The law was very vague when it was first put out, it appeared that it hadn’t gone under a lot of review, so that caused more problems for people who are just trying to find a better life for themselves and their families.”

Question 3: Why should or shouldn’t illegal immigrants be detained?

“Illegal immigrants shouldn’t be detained because they haven’t committed any kind of violent crime, they haven’t done anything to actually warrant being arrested or detained for any kind of purpose; they simply moved physical locations, and that doesn’t warrant being detained.”

Question 4:   Do you personally know someone who is illegal? How does that influence your opinion?

“I do know someone who is undocumented. I feel like I would feel the same way even if I didn’t know someone who wasn’t in this country legally. Knowing someone makes me feel even more strongly about my opinion: people who are in that situation are human, and they want to have a better life just like everyone else does.”

Question 5:  How do you feel about ongoing discussion with university administrations to deem Texas State a “Sanctuary Campus”? Do you think that status would affect how safe students feel on campus?

“Honestly, I think a Sanctuary Campus is a good idea in theory, but it’s not a law or anything, it’s just a promise that doesn’t hold a lot of weight. It would be nice, but it’s not the best thing we can come up with”

Question 6: If you were president, how would you deal with undocumented immigrants and people coming into the country?

“That’s a hard question. I wouldn’t deal with it. This is all in theory, I don’t know if it would work in practice. I would essentially set up a system where people would still have to mark on a document that they were non-citizens of the United States. But, I would have social services, or training, where I would pair people who are arriving from different countries with people that were similar to them, so they would become more well acquainted in an immigrant community in the United States.”
