With more than 300,000 subscribers, the Atlanta based dance group has managed to shake their way into fame and fortune from one simple YouTube video. In 2005, to the song, “She Got a Donk” by Soulja Boy, the Twerk Team started a new dance trend known as "twerking."
As defined on their website, twerking is “a hip hop dance move for females shaking, jerking, and twitching of their buttocks.”
Shivani Patel from San Antonio saw the Twerk Team on YouTube two years ago dancing to, “Round of Applause” by Waka Flocka Flame. She was impressed by the unfamiliar dance movement.
“It is the newest trend in dancing, and it is slowly taking over the rap and hip-hop game,” said Patel.
Krystal Perez from San Marcos subscribed to their channel a couple of months ago. She said the best music to twerk to is something that has a good baseline.
“I have seen the Twerk Team’s videos and I wish I could move my hips like that!” said Perez.
The Twerk Team has two members, Lady Luscious and Mizz. Twerk Sum. They have become Twitter and Facebook sensations, attracting more than 100,000 followers.
Jeffrey Riddle from Corpus Christi encountered his first twerk in a rap music video. Also a subscriber to their channel, Riddle has seen many of the twerk videos.
“They are amazing! I wish I could be like them and pop my booty like them!” said Riddle. “It is something that isn’t seen on a daily basis and it intrigues people who haven’t ever seen it.”
The attention the ladies received from their first YouTube video has led to many more posts, paid shows, and features in major artists’ music videos. They are currently going on tour with rapper French Montana, and their mix tape has been reported to release this summer.
