Evan Smith, CEO and editor-in-chief of The Texas Tribune, and Rodney Gibbs, chief innovation officer at The Texas Tribune, spoke Wednesday at Mass Comm Week about the new generation and how they can have the upperhand in the work force.
Smith recognized data as being an important factor and necessary for new journalists to understand.
"Data is a part of all types of communication," said Smith.
According to the speakers, students graduating and preparing for the real world need to be more versatile in their skills and realize that journalism is more than just writing. Smith and Gibbs emphasize that journalism also involves math and science.
Recently graduates are more technologically advanced than their predecessors and are being urged to use that knowledge to their advantage.
